The Grand River Hospital and Medical Center in the United States established a 24-hour pharmacy through distance health medical tools, saving US$300,000 in personnel costs. According to reports, the Grand River is a hospital in Western Colorado that has 13 severe beds and an average of 7 patients a day. Telemedicine products and services are gradually emerging in small, remote hospitals. For example, in mid-December 2017, the New York-Presbyterian Hospital cooperated with the Walgreens Pharmacy to provide emergency medical services at the in-store kiosks; and in 2017, Cleveland Clinic partnered with CVS Pharmacy to use AmericanWell's telemedicine platform to allow patients to contact medical personnel directly.
Many technology companies have also launched long-distance pharmacy services, including CPSTELEpharmacy, eVisit, PipelineRx, scriptProTelepharmacy, and TelePharm. GrandRiver medical staff use PipelinRx to connect with remote pharmacists. After the automatic dispensing machine releases the drug, these pharmacists verify the drug list and handle the doctor's questions. Nancy McClew, director of the pharmacy of GrandRiver, said that investing in telemedicine technology is worthwhile compared to hiring staff to maintain the 24-hour operation of the pharmacy department; of course, it is unlikely that human resources will be used to support the 24-hour operation of the pharmacy.
McClew said that there are no patients most nights, and there are few drug orders, usually just general medication, dosage adjustments, and formula replacements, and no pharmacists are required to deal with them. Medical staff can scan drug orders and use PipelineRx's telemedicine system to deliver to remote, dedicated pharmacists. After the remote pharmacist obtains the drug list from the hospital, he can enter the Grand River's electronic pharmacy system to verify the drug list.
The patient's medication history will be updated, and the system will send the medication ticket to the automatic medication delivery cabinet. This medicine cabinet will automatically generate drug labels, allowing nurses to add to the patients' medication records. At present, 95% of drugs are distributed through this system. If it is not possible to use this method to deliver prescriptions, they will be dealt with by nurses.
