South Korea’s “Korean Daily” released a news report that Samsung Electronics Technology Institute successfully used graphene to successfully develop a graphene battery that is 5 times faster than existing lithium batteries. The research results were published in the international academic magazine "Nature Communications" online version.
Previously, Samsung Electronics General Technology Institute, Samsung SDI, and Seoul University Research Group developed a technology for extracting a large amount of graphene using silica contained in sand or crystal. The graphene extracted by this technique exhibits a popcorn-like shape under the microscope and is therefore also referred to as a "graphene sphere."
Samsung Electronics General Technology Institute uses graphene balls as the positive electrode protective film and negative electrode material for lithium batteries, which increases the lithium battery capacity by 45% and increases the charging speed by 5 times. At present, even if the smart phone battery uses high-speed charging technology, it takes 1 hour to fully charge, but the graphene battery only takes 12 minutes. In addition, this battery can maintain its stability even when it is heated to 60°C, so it can also be applied to electric vehicles. Samsung Electronics has applied for a patent in the United States and South Korea. The industry predicts that this technology is expected to be commercialized within five years.
