Self-driving cars encounter driving language difficulties

According to foreign media reports, we all know that a self-driving car equipped with a laser radar can sense the 360-degree condition around the vehicle. The image sensor can identify signs, traffic lights, and lane markings. The radar can detect the object, and the computer can integrate all the above information and use the map data to provide navigation for the vehicle.

Although the ideal self-driving car will be able to “talk” with other vehicles to make navigation smoother and reduce traffic accidents, the technology is still in its infancy. However, any self-driving vehicle also needs to “talk” with other traditional vehicles and their drivers, pedestrians, and bicycles, and correctly reflect some unforeseen things such as lane closure, traffic light failure, and emergency ambulance And traffic accidents.

Complex driving language

For example, when you drive a car through a speed-monitoring area, you can flash a few lights to remind the driver of the oncoming vehicle to make it clear that the area belongs to the speeding surveillance area. But flashing lights can also mean that your high beam lights are too bright. You forgot to turn on your headlights. To understand these meanings accurately, drivers must consider these conditions: time, road conditions, and weather. But how does a self-driving car react?

In addition, there are other forms of communication, including horns and alarms, gesturing, and placing prompts on the body. Vehicles can learn to read road signs, and should therefore be taught to recognize commonly used prompts attached to vehicles. However, in the construction site or traffic accident scene, it is difficult for the autonomous vehicle to read all the gestures or prompt information, and it is also impossible to program all the gestures or prompt information into the navigation system, because the gestures in each place represent different Meaning (even for everyone). A self-driving car may not recognize these gestures or misunderstand a gesture, resulting in an accident.

Google's self-driving cars clearly identify the cyclist's gestures, but what if the cyclist uses a standard gesture? Who can embed this kind of algorithm in the system?

"Robottics Trends" describes an event that occurred in 2015 when the self-driving car mistakenly read the signal sent by the cyclist. Every country and city has different conventional language habits. However, with the increasing number of self-driving cars on the road, it remains to be seen whether auto-driving car R&D engineers can program these subtle but very important differences into the self-driving car system.
