“Chip Bugs Door” incident renews Apple’s first class action lawsuit in the United States

Since the chip-level security loophole that began in January 2018, giants such as Intel, ARM, AMD, Apple, Microsoft, and Google have all been involved and none have been spared. After Intel and AMD's market value successively "greatly shrank", Apple also suffered the first class action in the United States.

According to Lei Feng network previously reported that the main characters of this loophole are Meltdown (Fuse) and Spectre (ghost) two CPU vulnerabilities, which can use the SpeculativeExecution (speculative execution) mechanism in the CPU, so that hackers read from the CPU memory through user-level applications Take core data. All modern Intel, ARM, AMD, and Nvidia processors will suffer, and Apple has also used Intel or its own A-series processors in its own smartphones, Apple computers, and PCs.

Although so far there have been a number of companies including Apple released a patch package. However, Apple suffered the first class action lawsuit in the United States because of this and other reasons.

According to reports, the plaintiffs of the lawsuit were Anthony Bartling and Jacqueline Olson. They both filed a class action lawsuit against the consumers of all Apple devices that purchased ARM-based processors last week in the US District Court of San Jose. Apple devices include the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV using A4 to A11 chips.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple had already known the defects of this chip vulnerabilities at least since June 2017, but did not disclose details to the public in a timely manner. The plaintiff also stated that Apple is unlikely to provide a comprehensive Meltdown and Spectre solution without reducing processor performance.

It is understood that the class action lawsuit is expected to involve more than 100 Apple users, and the total amount of compensation and compensation is expected to exceed US$5 million.

For example, Lei Feng reported that after this chip vulnerability was exposed, Apple had released countermeasures last week. For Meltdown, Apple added protection measures in iOS11.2 & macOS10.13.2 & tvOS11.2, and Apple Watch was not affected. For Specture, Apple added updates to macOS 10.13.2 and mitigated the vulnerability in iOS 11.2.2. At the same time, the company also recommends that users download applications from trusted sources including APPStore. Currently, these vulnerabilities have been resolved in earlier versions of macOS and OSX.

Previously there was news that Apple's Spectre patch led to a developer's iPhone6 performance significantly reduced, but the company said that the test showed that this mitigation measures did not have a significant impact on the Speedometer and SRES-6 running results, in JetStream The impact of running points is also less than 2.5%.

According to the report of the United States science and technology news website PatentlyApple recently, some Israeli users also submitted a class action application to the Haifa District Court, and they planned to suing Apple, Intel and ARM for these two CPU loopholes. These plaintiffs belonged to the users of the processor chip, and they sued the companies for the "processor loopholes that undermine their own privacy security."

However, in this incident of security loopholes in the processor industry, Apple's use of a processor as a customer has been affected by this lawsuit, which is inevitable.
