No longer the preserve of such traditional wine regions as Bordeaux, France, the Australia`s Yarra Valley or Napa Valley in the United States, wine tourism is now emerging as a strong trend in parts of the Chinese mainland. The phenomenon has emerged amid the growing trend of wine consumption as a lifestyle choice in China, and has also proved effective among winemakers looking to build domestic brands.
One area on the mainland to benefit from this new tourism sector is Qinhuangdao in northeastern Hebei province. Located on the coast of the Bohai Sea, the city has been at the centre of China's wine trade for more than 30 years. Qinhuangdao has come to be known as the "Bordeaux of China," partly because it shares the same latitude as the famous French winemaking region, and partly because of the quality of its output.
Changli, Lulong and Funing, three wine-producing counties in Qinhuangdao, are collectively known as the Changli claret cluster. Established by the provincial government, and now directly under the control of the municipal authorities, the cluster is home to about 2,333 hectares of vineyards, as well as more than 70 wineries and distilleries.
